Welcome to the Brian Mullins Photography Blog

As a long time resident of the Raleigh area, Brian’s background in visually diverse fields add a unique and timeless flavor to his photographical work. With training in cinematography and concert lighting, his eye for composition and an appreciation of dramatic lighting was permanently ingrained into his soul.

Upon embarking in pursuit of a professional photography career, Brian quickly enjoyed great success and gained immediate respect from his local peers. Capturing the Chief of Photography position for Cary Magazine only 6 months after he begun freelancing for them is a true testament of his photographic style and vision.

Brian has further developed his photojournalistic and artistic senses with numerous weddings, galas, commercial, editorial and product photography projects which all enable him to be considered one of the area’s most well-rounded photographers.

Brian has learned to effortlessly anticipate movement, possesses an inherent knowledge of the most photogenic angles and is always watching for the dramatic & beautiful light to capture that unique moment in time—then he does it again and again. The result—a photographic record of your wedding unmatched in emotion and immediacy.

Flash photography Workshop - Neil Van Niekerk

On Monday of this week, Neil Van Niekerk - one of the most well known wedding photographers for their work using flash - visited us in Raleigh to conduct a one day workshop on, well, flash.  I had really been aching for Neil to come close enough for me to make the trip because his flash work is something I really strive to mimic.

It certainly was a long day with enough technical information and theory to cause a photography “reboot” inside my head.  I think it was actually perfect because some of his techniques are very counter-intuitive at first…. then you see the results and after you pick your jaw up from the floor, you realize there is another whole new world available to you with flash.

If you’re a photographer and reading this - GO SEE HIM!.  If you’re a client, hopefully you’ll enjoy the photos below and realize that, just because it’s at night, we can still get some really striking photography.  All of these images are taken during the seminar.

First - Someone shot Neil…  Not sure quite who but I know we had 3 cameras pointed at him.

Now for some stuff during the day using fill flash.

Here’s some stuff from after dinner with only the ambient streetlight and fill flash.

Japanese Diplomats & Business visit NC!

Once a year, the leaders of industry, education and government from North Carolina and Japan congregate for a relationship & knowledge sharing session.  This year the conference was held in North Carolina and I was fortunate enough to be able to photograph their initial gathering at the Research triangle Foundation and a very exclusive dinner held at the North Carolina Museum of Art.

The welcoming event, held at the Research Triangle Foundation in RTP welcomed all the participants and everyone was treated to a short presentation by Governor Mike Easley.  Immediately following the reception, a dinner was held for the VIP’s at the Art Museum in downtown Raleigh.  After dinner, the VIP’s were treated to an incredible short theatrical presentation by 3 very talented Broadway performers.  Dressed as “living statues” in all white, these three incredibly talented performers sang 5-6 operatic songs in fluent italian.  I’ve never seen anything like it and while I love the photos, it just doesn’t do the mood justice.

Overall, the event was absolutely gorgeous and even though I don’t have much experience in overseas diplomatic relations, it was easy to see the bridges being built and relationships founded between everyone invited.

Here’s a few shots of the evening!

Dawn & Bryan - Dunn, NC Wedding

Dawn & Bryan Stewart held a beautifully intimate affair this weekend at the Barrington House in Dunn, North Carolina.  Having never been there before but seen a few pictures (that didn’t do it justice), I was filled with glee upon first setting my eyes on the facility.  I don’t know the history of the house, but it certainly is either late 1800’s or very early 1900’s and has been restored to its original condition and decorated very elegantly on both the inside and outside.

It serves as a bed & breakfast and has so many photographic opportunities, I probably annoyed the happy couple to take photos in all sorts of locations.

It was a very intimate gathering of about 40 people and they were married underneath a gazebo in the “backyard”.  With a 3-tiered fountain as a backdrop, they exchanged their vows and sealed it with a kiss that, literally, everyone in the crowd felt because of the true love between them.  From the ceremony we went straight to the food that is well worth the drive, even without the beautiful surroundings you’re dining in.  Good friends, family and a happy couple made for a truly unforgettable celebration.

As always, here’s a few shots of the day!

Now for something a little different…

For those that know me, I am always up for photographing different things.  I truly believe pushing my own boundaries, both technically and artistically, makes me a better photographer in every aspect.  This past weekend I had the opportunity to shoot the Carolina Crown MMA event held at the RBC Center in Raleigh, NC.  Yes, a very far cry from weddings or commercial photography but definitely with its own set of challenges.  If you are not into MMA then you may want to skip the photos below (nothing bad by any means, but it is indeed a contact sport).

The evening was packed with fights & music.  14 fights in all and a local band performing for both the opening bout and intermission between the amateur & professional matches.  The evening was packed with excitement and the athletes, band, promoters and referees all did an outstanding job to bring MMA back to the triangle.  A special thanks to Doug Muhle for lobbying to legalize MMA in North Carolina and putting on a great event!

Now, on to the photos:

Caroline & Jeff… Congratulations!

I’m trying out something new with my business.  I’m wanting to take an initial photograph of every couple I have a consultation with.  The lucky couple who got to be my first one was Caroline & Jeff.  They’re getting married in 2009 and are planning on a beautiful wedding ceremony & reception in Raleigh, North Carolina.  After meeting with them today, I’m very excited at the prospect of working with them and, as always, wish them all the best on their journey thru the planning process.

Here’s my introductory shot of the, from today:
