I’ve been spending my spare time over the past couple of weeks gathering material and partially helping build my trade show booth for the Raleigh Bridal Show in January. After a trip to home depot to pick up some paint, staple gun and other assorted toys, I came across this unbelievable sunset! I quickly took a secondary road to a church I had photographed before (The church was built in the mid 1800’s) and parked the car. I don’t really do alot of landscape photography but this certainly got my juices flowing to get more involved in that field.

This may be common out on the west coast, but we rarely get skies this color. Hope you enjoy the photos!

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting with Amy and Rommie this week. They are in the planning stages for their 2009 wedding in Raleigh and were kind enough to meet with me regarding their photography. Amy has such a bubbly and infectious personality I found myself smiling simply by hearing her describe her plans for the big day. I don’t want to spoil the plans by making them public, but I can say that from what she’s told me so far, the wedding surely will be a beautiful and unforgettable event.

Here’s a shot of the happy bride:

Tonight I had the real pleasure of sitting down with Christa, who is getting married in May of next year in Raleigh, NC. Due to both of our schedules, Christa and I had been talking over e-mail about what she’s looking for in a photographer and when we finally sat down, we spent quite some time talking about it in great detail. Her wedding certainly sounds like it will be a wonderful affair and I certainly hope to be able to capture it for her and her (soon to be) new husband, John.

Here’s a quick photo of her after we had been talking for a while. She’s still smiling so I think that’s a good sign. In the backround is her friend, bridesmaid & roommate (and possible future client) Julie.

Working as a photographer has many great perks. My number one favorite perk is seeing true emotions of joy & happiness come out on the big day, no matter if it’s a wedding, a new wing for kids at a hospital, a birthday, Bat Mitzvah, etc. These emotions carry over long after the cake has been boxed up and the tuxes returned. Many times, when editing the photographs, I get to re-live those emotions just as I hope my clients do when they receive everything.

Getting that Thank You!, a hug and even a very heartfelt letter really makes the long hours and late nights of editing and designing truly worth it. Knowing you were able to not only record the event, but also capture some of that true emotion and preserve it for generations really reflects on how important photography is and why, as a photographer, I need to always push my boundaries into new territory and become an emotion junkie (in camera anyway). So when I got my mail the other day, this really came as a true surprise and I have been smiling for 3 days straight now.

I want to thank everyone of my clients who have written me notes, given me that warm thank you or that knowing handshake for doing what I’m so passionate about. I have saved every note and remember every heartfelt thank you I ever gotten, but this was the most unexpected thing I have received to date. So, from me to my clients, thank you for letting me be part of your lives & celebrations and while the below is never, ever expected or anticipated, it confirms my beliefs that I’m doing much more then just taking pictures!

A few weeks ago a colleague of mine, Kittie Deemer, and I put together the “Unportrait Portrait” session. This was Kittie’s brainchild and when she told me about it, I was immediately up to help organize. “what was it” you ask? Good question! As a wedding photographer, many times we are pressed for time and rarely have the opportunity to not worry about how the photography turns out – in other words, total artistic freedom. The Unportrait Portrait session really focused on letting the photographer shoot exactly how they wanted without worrying about getting a “safe” shot.

To achieve this, we enlisted the assistance of two very talented models, Heather & Lauren, poured them into a few different wedding dresses and went to downtown Raleigh with a total of 6 photographers, 2 models, 3 dresses & 1 scarf (RIP). The sun was out, the winds were blowing approximately 40 mph and we suffered only one casualty, the scarf. It was literally ripped from our models hand and soared over 15 stories in the air before landing somewhere on top of a parking deck. With the impending weather, we didn’t bother to look for it. During our dinner break, the weather decided we should work on indoor shooting and The Big Easy came to our rescue. They literally let us have the run of the place and with such rich textures, great ambient light and vibrant colors, it really made our evening.

Special thanks to everyone who participated – Ken, Bob, Patti, and Frank!

Now, onto a few of the photos:

I met Lauren through another site a few months ago. She was looking to update her modeling portfolio and I had been aching to do an an architecturally influenced modeling shoot. After getting hair & makeup done by Ginger Mullins, we headed off to Fayetteville St. in Raleigh. As soon as we arrived, there were so many ideas coming up at once that we really just jumped right in. The session lasted over 2 hours and we both really had a blast!

So, without further adieu, I give you the very talented Lauren Ruby!

After a shoot this past week, another photographer and I were talking about different techniques for shooting and lighting. I decided to try something I had seen but never had the time to actually try. This lighting technique involves using a “cookie” (No, not like the toll house cookies) in between your light source and subject. The results can be rather unique and I think this one really turned out nicely. She said she wanted it as fine art – I wouldn’t go that far but it was pretty cool.

First, let me apologize to the non-photographers reading this entry. This story, while written with my usual charming style, will contain a little more detail on the camera used then normal.

Pam Schmid, who I have photographed on a couple of different occasions, invited my wife and I to her house for a Christmas party. This happened to coincide with the delivery of my Nikon D300 body so, like any good photographer, I decided to take it for a test drive in a non-paid capacity. As expected, the atmosphere was fairly dark with hotspots like candles and xmas lights string around the house. I also expected a good bit of dancing and action so it was an excellent opportunity to try it out in a scenario not unlike a wedding reception.

All I can say is, WOW! This camera will actually change the way I shoot and takes a huge leap past the leading low light/high-ISO performer and is now the leading pro camera in the industry. The photos below were only color corrected and sharpened, no other filtering was done. Anyway, back to the actual story.

So Pam’s Christmas party also happens to coincide with her birthday (Happy B-DAY Pam! – Here’s to you!) and her husband surprised her with a cake and Celine Dion tickets, for 2009! Everyone at the party had a wonderful time largely due to Jerry’s & Pam’s gracious hospitality and warmth! Here’s a couple from the party (I left the EXIF data on the photos for my fellow photographers who wanted to read it):

Here’s Pam getting pushed into the middle of the floor where she finally got eyes on her birthday cake (iso 1600).

And sometimes, you just get lucky with the timing of a shot. I don’t think I’ve ever caught this few candles in various stages of being blown out (iso 1000):

After a fairly crazy week of shooting, my wife and I got a chance to have a nice relaxing dinner at the Red Bowl in Cary (previous clients of mine). If you are in the area and appreciate good sushi, I would highly recommend this place. Simon & Tim (owners) really run a nice restaurant and the quality of food is top notch. Whether you are into the rolls or more extreme cuisine such as Sashimi (raw fish, no rice), the Red Bowl has it all. I highly recommend the Yellowtail Sashimi (Hamachi) if you’re into this type of thing. An added bonus is the Kilwin’s Ice Cream store being right beside the Red Bowl. I think they have a fan venting the sweet smell of ice cream and waffle cones onto the sidewalk. The shopping center itself is beautiful (at the corner of Davis and High House) and should continue to attract high-end stores and boutiques.

Here’s a shot I happened to grab after dinner.. check out that sky!
